What happens to my cargo from Mombasa to my door?

Drafted, awaiting ADL

ADL does not promise a clearance time: release depends on your documents, inspection and duty payment. No forwarder controls all three.

Your cargo
  • Bill of lading: The shipping line's receipt for your cargo and its contract to carry it.
  • Delivery order: The shipping line's written permission to collect your cargo.
  • Customs entry: The declaration ADL lodges for your goods in iCMS, KRA's customs system.
  • Customs release: The point at which customs lets your goods go.
  • Port clearance: KPA, the port authority, clears your cargo to leave the port.
  1. Step 1 of 5

    Berth

Your ship docks at Mombasa. ADL arranges the discharge.

  2. Step 2 of 5

    Discharge

Cranes lift your cargo ashore. ADL obtains the delivery order, the shipping line's written permission to collect it. The line, not ADL, sets its charges.

  3. Step 3 of 5

    Customs

ADL's own people lodge your entry and see it through to customs release. Check your documents before the ship docks.

  4. Step 4 of 5

    Road

An ADL truck with a vetted driver takes it to Nairobi. Its tracking device, separate from KRA's customs e-seal, lets the transport office tell you where it is.

  5. Step 5 of 5

    Door

Your consignment arrives at your door in Nairobi.

Why ADL

Why choose ADL for clearing and forwarding?

Drafted, awaiting ADL
Three things you can hold ADL to.
  • Its own trucks and transport managers

The transport division has its own management and is linked to ADL's head office.

  • Every driver vetted, every truck tracked

ADL vets each driver on previous employment and driving record, then trains and assesses them at intervals.

  • Costs explained before you commit

ADL explains each charge and gives you a free printout of what is required.

One thing ADL will not do: skip a step customs requires.

Questions

Three things to know before you hire any clearing agent

Drafted, awaiting ADL
  • Do I need a clearing agent to import into Kenya?

Usually yes: KRA says an importer needs a licensed customs clearing agent for commercial goods, with exceptions for parcels and personal goods. Who can clear without an agent

  • What documents are needed to clear goods in Kenya?

Most imports need a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, an import declaration through the KenTrade single window and a Certificate of Origin. See the full document list

  • How long does clearing take at Mombasa?

There is no fixed time: NCTTCA puts the port-wide average stay of an import container at Mombasa at 105 hours for January to June 2026, a figure for the port, not for ADL. What moves the clearance time

Sources: KRA, KenTrade, NCTTCA. Last checked: 12 October 2026.
